August – Amtrak completes installation and implementation of Positive Train Control , a safety technology designed to match train speed to track conditions for improved safety, on all Amtrak-owned or controlled tracks (898 route-miles). Launches the toll-free USA-RAIL, making it possible for anyone, anywhere in the U.S., to make a train reservation or find out information about any Amtrak train 24 hours a day.

The weekday-only schedule includes one southbound and one northbound train per day with an approximate trip time of two hours and 35 minutes. August 30 – In conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Amtrak launches the Valley Flyer, a new State Supported train offering daily service between Greenfield, Mass., and New Haven, Conn. Amtrak posts record GAAP revenue of $3.4 billion, an increase of 2.5 percent over FY 2017; adjusted operating earnings of ($170.6 million) are the best to date and an 11.9 percent improvement over the prior year.
